Salt Lake City Police Increase Patrols and Plan to Meet With Concerned Citizens

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The Salt Lake City Police Department is increasing patrols in the North Temple area.
Officers say there’s been an uptick in crime between 600 W and Redwood Road recently.

This doesn’t surprise many of the folks who live and work in the area. Neighbors have organized a grass roots community meeting with police Wednesday night on combating criminal activity in the area.
Some residents and business owners we spoke to believe the increase is because of Operation Rio Grande, as criminals have moved illegal activities away from the targeted area downtown.
While Salt Lake City Police won’t attribute the uptick in crime to that crime sweep, they say they are stepping up their patrols as crime statistics here have recently risen.
While police are looking into the possibility of a temporary police substation for bike officers in the neighborhood, they hope they don’t have to go to that extreme. Rather, they hope they can mitigate the issues themselves and with our help too.
“We really encourage people to get to know their neighbors, get to know the people that live in their neighborhoods, so if something is out of sorts, it doesn’t belong that they’re ready and watching that and can alert us quicker,” said Sgt. Brandon Shearer, Salt Lake Police.
The community meeting with police is Wednesday from 6:30 to 8pm at 76 S 900 W (Art’s Place).
Salt Lake City police say they check crime statistics regularly and adjust resources accordingly.
