Herriman’s Abrupt Departure From Unified Police Ripples Through Valley

RIVERTON, Utah – In an emergency meeting Thursday morning, Riverton City Council members unanimously approved an intent to withdraw from United Police Department.
While it doesn’t mean the city will definitely part ways with UPD, the city council has given 12 months’ notice.
Riverton city officials called the emergency meeting after learning the UPD board was planning on discussing a withdrawal formula at their Thursday morning meeting.
Simply, this withdrawal formula is essentially a consequence for a city in the UPD district that doesn’t give the board ample time to prepare for a future exit, like Herriman did.
Riverton city officials weren’t fans of the proposed formula, which they argue was given to them last minute. Plus, the city’s mayor says there have been systematic issues with the police department.
Just about an hour before the UPD board meeting began, Riverton City Council members approved the intent to withdraw from UPD. Then, UPD’s board didn’t approve the withdrawal formula.
Salt Lake County Sheriff Rosie Rivera hopes to come to an agreement with Riverton, the city where she resides.
The UPD board is still dealing with Herriman’s definite departure at the end of September. Sheriff Rivera maintains people living in Herriman will be well protected during the transition.
