Police Investigate Another Dog Shooting In Eagle Mountain

Jan 7, 2019, 9:51 PM | Updated: 10:38 pm

EAGLE MOUNTAIN, Utah – Another dog has been shot in Eagle Mountain, according to police. It’s the third dog shot since April. It’s leaving residents on edge and nervous to allow their 4-legged family members outdoors.

The Schonberg family, like many other dog owners don’t let their dogs stay outdoors for too long in the cold temperatures, but in the short time their dog Penny was outside, she nearly was killed.

At first glance, 4-year-old, Penny, a Pitbull Boston-Terrier mix looks happy as can be. However, if you look a little closer, the fresh wound is there and so is the fear. Even the KSL camera caught her off-guard and caused her to try and run away.

Kadie Schonberg believes the shooting happened sometime Friday, but at first chalked up the wound to Penny roughing around with her other dogs.

“This morning she woke up, and she had been bleeding and crying and limping and so we took her to the vet,” said Schonberg.

The vet confirmed her worst fears.

“We were hoping it wasn’t the case,” she said. “We were hoping she didn’t get shot and then the vet told us that and we were in total disbelief.”

Schonberg says Penny was only in the backyard a short time, and the person who did this got close.

“The vet said the pellet was so far in that he felt somebody did it intentionally, and they were pretty close and they wanted to hurt the dog.”

Schonberg says she heard about the two other dog shootings in Eagle Mountain, but wasn’t worried because they occurred several miles away.

“It really made me feel bad that anybody could do that to a do for whatever reason,” she said.

Now, she says she’s second guessing letting any of her family members outside with the dog.

“It kind of makes me nervous to let her out in the yard with the kids in case somebody wants to do this again,” she said.

On Tuesday, Penny will undergo surgery to remove the pellet. The vet bills will likely total close to a thousand dollars. However, she says the money is nothing compared to the loss of peace of mind.

The Utah County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting and plan on coming back out to Eagle Mountain on Tuesday when it’s light out. They will be talking with nearby neighbors and is asking for anyone with information to give them a call at 801-851-4000.
