East Sandy Elementary On Shelter In Place After Possible Threat Sent By Email

SANDY, Utah – Police are investigating a message sent to an East Sandy Elementary School employee that could be construed as a threat, and officials are taking precautions to keep children safe.

However, the credibility of the possible threat has not been verified.

Parents and guardians with students at East Sandy Elementary School, 8295 S. 865 East, were sent an email Sunday evening that the school received an email that contained information that could be “construed as a threat.”

According to that message, an employee at the school received an email containing information “that could be construed as a threat.” School officials alerted law enforcement and told parents and guardians that precautions are being taken.

“The school will be placed on shelter-in-place status, and an extra police presence will be at the school throughout the day,” the email to parents stated. “Counselors also will be available for students who may be experiencing anxiety or other difficult emotions.”

Kirsten Stewart, associate communications director at Canyons School District, said the external doors to the elementary will remain locked Monday, and students and employees will free to move about about the building.

“School goes on as normal,” she said.

Officials also said parents also have the right to decide what is best for their families, and they will work with those students whose parents have decided to keep their children out of school Monday.

“Schools are remarkably safe,” Stewart said. “Data show that that they are the safest place for children, and they’re getting safer. But it’s important for families to know that we take all threats seriously. We’ll investigate all of them — and that includes hoax threats.”
