Burglars Steal 28 Firearms, Suspect ‘Could Be Armed,’ Police Say

BRIGHAM CITY – Police are looking for help from the public in finding a man they say is known to carry firearms on him.

Detectives say Matthew Myers is one of two men suspected of stealing 28 guns from a storage unit earlier this month, along with some scopes and ammunition.

Jason Huggins, who was works next door to the storage units, said he noticed something unusual the morning after the break-in.

“(I) just noticed a bunch of boxe, laying out here in the road and a couple of cases and I thought maybe it was some garbage that had blown over,” Huggins explained.

As he walked closer to the fenced-in units he said he noticed a cut lock on the ground and called police. Detectives later obtained surveillance videos, which show two men walking in through the fence.

One of the men, who officers identify as Myers, cuts a lock with a bolt cutter, and the men are seen walking away with some large, black cases, and cardboard boxes. Lieutenant James Crapse says some good detective work helped officers find some of the weapons.

“Our detective looked at the pawn shop database, and found some similar guns that had been pawned that matched the description of three of the 28 guns that had been stolen,” Crapse said. “He matched up the surveillance at the pawn shops with the surveillance that we had with the burglaries.”

Crapse said with that information, police served a warrant at a home in Ogden, arresting Chris Kirchgater, who identified Matthew Myers as his accomplice. Crapse says Myers is from Arizona, but was staying in the Ogden area with a friend.

“His friends say that he’s always carrying one or two guns on him at all times,” Crapse explained. “And said that he doesn’t want to go to jail or be caught, so probably more dangerous to us than to the public.”

Anyone who might spot Myers or know where he is, is asked to call the Brigham City Police Department, or 911. People are asked to use caution and not approach Myers.
