LAYTON, Utah – Layton City Police arrested a man in connection to an apartment fire that displaced 23 families and caused approximately $2 million in damage.

According to arresting documents, Angel David Colebrook, 20, of Layton, told police that “the fire started as a result of his playing with a lighter and incense candle.”

The report also states that gasoline had been stored inside the apartment and had spilled onto the floor prior to the fire.

The fire broke out at approximately 2:30 p.m. July 23 at the Layton Meadows Apartments. It was initially reported as a cooking fire.

Apartment residents told KSL TV at the time that they suspected someone had used a barbecue inside the apartment where the fire originated, and that they have complained about the resident before.

“The actions of the defendant were without regard for the safety and well being of others despite substantial risk created when exposing an open flame to gasoline,” according to police documents. “Such disregard constitutes a gross deviation from the standard care a person of lake age and life experience would exercise.”

Colebrook was booked into the Davis County Jail on suspicion of reckless burning and reckless endangerment.
