GARDEN CITY, Utah – Another large truck has crashed at an intersection near Bear Lake and destroyed three storage units less than one week after a crash at the same location – and the third time in the last year.

The crash happened Tuesday afternoon at the intersection of U.S. 89 and State Route 30, better known as Raspberry Square.

Lieutenant Lee Perry with the Utah Highway Patrol said the driver and co-driver suffered minor injuries. No one else was injured in the crash.

Chief Mike Wahlburg with the Garden City Fire District said the truck was hauling asphalt.

Witnesses said a second truck following the first also appeared to have problems while approaching the intersection. They said smoke was coming from the brakes. Officials were working to determine exactly what happened.

Second crash in less than a week

On August 15, a semitrailer hauling chocolate milk lost its brakes at the same intersection and crashed into the same storage units.

Perry said the driver did everything he could to avoid hitting any people or cars before slamming into the units.

Surveillance video shows the truck barreling through the intersection, crossing a vacant lot where a store used to stand.

October crash kills driver, destroys store

Less than a year ago, another crash destroyed a sporting goods store at the location. The driver was killed in the crash while a passenger suffered critical injuries.

Authorities said the truck was going 55 mph when he tried to make a right turn at the intersection and an eyewitness said the trailer had smoke coming from it.

The truck slammed into Pugstones Sporting Goods, damaging the building beyond repair.

Chris Kerper, one of the first people on the scene of the crash, said the road needs to be considered for at least one — if not more — runaway truck ramps.

Another crash at the same intersection in Garden City.
