Police Asking For Access To Doorbell Camera Footage

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – More packages will undoubtedly begin showing up on doorsteps as the holiday season approaches.
The Ring doorbell or streaming cameras can come in hand – but not just to scare off the porch pirates looking to take something that doesn’t belong to them.
Many of the devices in your home cost fewer than $100, but the security camera industry is one that’s moving toward the $1 billion mark.
A recent report stated that by next year, smart security devices will be in 22 million American homes. Local police departments are hoping to have access to those citizens’ cameras for the sake of tracking down would-be thieves and other criminals.
The Salt Lake City Police Department has a voluntary program called SafeCam. Business owners and homeowners can sign up, giving law enforcement access to video footage if and when a crime is committed nearby. It will allow them to find potential evidence that may have been caught on camera.
It also makes it easier for police to get the footage quickly to start working the case and get information and images to the public.
Other local law enforcement may also have similar programs. Check with your area’s police department if you’re interested in helping.
