LEHI, Utah – Officials with the Utah Department of Transportation and Utah Highway Patrol said a lowered advisory speed limit will be in effect for semitrailers and trucks on northbound Interstate 15 in the Technology Corridor construction zone.

The change, which lowers the speed limit for trucks to 50 mph, came after multiple crashes involving semitrailers occurred in the same area.

“It may be an abundance of caution, but we’ve changed the advisory speed limit to 50 mph for the trucks that are moving through that work zone,” said UDOT spokesperson John Gleason. “And we’re asking everybody, really, to slow down, especially through the winter months, as they’re driving through the work zone. We’re seeing far too many people that are driving faster than the reduced speed limit (of 60 mph).”

The latest crash happened Monday when the final trailer of a triple-hauler truck rolled during the evening commute, closing two lanes.

On Saturday, a semitrailer hauling butane rolled between the Lehi Main Street and 2100 North exits, closing both directions of I-15 for hours.

Gleason said UDOT crews are continually looking at ways to improve safety throughout the work zone but he said drivers need to slow down and pay attention as construction areas can change on a daily basis.

“We’re also asking everybody else to do their part as well, and that’s slowing down, putting away the distractions and really paying attention as you’re driving through a work zone,” he said. “A work zone, by nature, can change on a daily basis. You can have changing traffic shifts, traffic patterns that change, lane splits — and the lanes are more narrow than they usually are on established freeways.”
