New Ramps Open As I-15 Tech Corridor Nears Completion

LEHI, Utah – After more than two years of construction, the Interstate 15 Technology Corridor widening project is entering the home stretch with two new on-ramps opening this week.

“This is exciting,” said project director Boyd Humpherys. “We’re getting to the point that we’re starting to see a lot of these features that we’ve been working on, designing and building for the last several years, and now we’re putting them into place.”

Starting Wednesday morning, Utah Department of Transportation crews will open a new flyover on-ramp that connects 2100 North in Lehi to southbound I-15. Over the weekend, crews are also expected to open a new ramp from Thanksgiving Way to southbound I-15.

“It feels like we’ve been talking about the Technology Corridor for the last five to 10 years, but it’s because it’s such a critical project,” said UDOT spokesperson John Gleason. “Once this project is complete in November, people are going to understand that it was worth the wait.”

Construction started in May 2018 to widen a four-mile stretch of the interstate from Timpanogos Highway to Lehi Main Street. The section was the last portion of I-15 in Utah County to only have four lanes in each direction.

“You’d have traffic coming into this section and it would just completely slow down,” Gleason said. “We’d see hourlong delays. So we’ve addressed that and we’ve made it better.”

Gleason said the project was extensive and included rebuilding 17 bridges while adding two lanes in each direction. Also, the area will feature a one-way frontage road system to allow for easy access to attractions like Thanksgiving Point and the Outlets at Traverse Mountain.

“All the growth that’s happening right now, it doesn’t show any signs that it’s going to stop,” Gleason said. “So we need to make sure that we’re making smart decisions for the future.”

The infamous section of I-15 is known for bottlenecks, sudden curves and confusing lane shifts. Motorists said it was welcome news to learn the area will be construction-free by the fall.

“Utah and construction on I-15 is just synonymous,” said LeeAnne Davies of Herriman. “I feel like this stretch, especially, has been so frustrating for so long.”
