Group Files Referendum To Provo Mask Mandate

PROVO, Utah – Students at Brigham Young University are back at school and facing new mask requirements – both on- and off-campus.

Last week, the Provo City Council unanimously approved a citywide mask mandate. Mayor Michelle Kaufusi vetoed the measure, which the Council overturned by a vote of 6-1.

A Utah group has filed a referendum to the mandate. The referendum would show up on the November 2021 ballot, a year after the current ordinance is set to expire.

Under Utah law, if the referendum is determined to be legally referable to voters, and it gets signatures from 7.5% of Provo voters, the ordinance can’t take effect.

However, the ordinance will remain in effect until a sufficient number of signatures are gathered.
