Weber School District Adding Camera Checks To Regular Bus Inspections

Sep 29, 2020, 10:25 PM

ROY, Utah – Weber School District officials are investigating how a 4-year-old boy was left alone for two hours on a school bus, and they’re working to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

A district spokesman told KSL-TV’s Deanie Wimmer that it was an unfortunate incident that they are working to correct. One thing they are looking at is incorporating checks when buses go in for their regular maintenance to make sure their cameras are working.

The parents of a 4-year-old boy put him on the bus, he was strapped into his bus seat. When he got home, they asked how was school was, but learned he’d never made it to class. He’d been left alone on the bus for two hours.

EXCLUSIVE: A family in Roy is calling for action and demanding answers after their 4-year-old boy was left alone on a school bus for two hours.

It wasn’t until the bus driver got back on the bus that he discovered the boy.

There are protocols in place to prevent this from happening. The driver and bus aide are supposed to do a bus sweep at the end of a route, and with COVID-19 measures, they are supposed to sanitize every seat after each route.

And when district officials went to view the bus camera footage, they learned the camera wasn’t working and hadn’t been recording footage for about two years.

The parents are now demanding answers for how this happened and furthermore, why the school never called them to report him absent.

District officials said they’re working to find answers to all those questions, but the parents have hired an attorney and administrators said they can’t comment on specifics.

They did say one thing they’ll look at, again, is bringing in camera maintenance with all the other scheduled bus maintenance.
