Police: Man Shot After Advancing On Ogden Officer With Handgun & Butcher Knife

OGDEN, Utah – One man was shot and hospitalized in good condition after police said he advanced on an Ogden police officer with a butcher knife in one hand and a handgun in the other.

The incident happened around 7:06 p.m. Tuesday in the 800 block of 5th Street.

Chief Randy Watt with the Ogden Police Department said a caseworker with the Utah Department of Human Services contacted police, saying an “18-year-old male was inside a house … threatening to kill himself.” The caseworker also reported the male was armed with a shotgun.

Watt said dispatch received a follow-up call while officers were heading to the home, saying the man was fighting with two other people inside the home.

Officers arrived at the home around 7:17 p.m. and established a perimeter “in order to make contact and attempt to calm the situation while determining what exactly was occurring,” Watt said.

After two people came out from the front of the house to speak with officers, Watt said the suspect came out of a back door with a handgun in one hand and a butcher knife in the other.

“The suspect advanced rapidly on an officer at the rear of the house,” Watt said. “The officer retreated while yelling to stop the suspect’s advance, but was unsuccessful in doing so.”

The officer then fired multiple rounds and struck the suspect once in the abdomen, according to Watt.

Officers secured the scene and rendered first aid to the suspect, who was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Watt said the suspect was in good condition Tuesday night.

Police said the officer was wearing a body camera at the time and it was activated. That officer has been placed on administrative leave, “as is standard in these events,” Watt said.

The incident has been turned over to the Critical Incident Response Team of the Weber County Attorney’s Office. Watt said the investigation is continuing and it will likely take several days before more information is available.
