HARARE, Zimbabwe — A small groundbreaking ceremony was held for the Zimbabwe Harare Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Church leaders and invited guests, including the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, gathered at the site on Saturday.
Officials said the single-story temple will be constructed on a 6.7-acre site located in the Highlands area of Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital city.
Former Church President Thomas S. Monson announced plans to build a temple in Zimbabwe during a General Conference session in April 2016.
The 17,250-square-foot structure marks the 1st temple to be built in the country of Zimbabwe and the 12th temple on the African continent — 7 of which have been announced or are under construction.
Details for the open house and temple dedication will be announced at a future date, according to the Church’s press release.
