Gephardt: ‘Don’t Worry’ H&R Block Tells Customers Whose Stimulus Checks Went To Wrong Account

Jan 5, 2021, 6:57 PM | Updated: 7:43 pm

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Some Utahns are experiencing a delay getting their second stimulus payment.

The KSL Investigators have heard from several people who say they got their first stimulus payment without any issues but their second one may have gone to the wrong bank account.

Emily Patcher filed her 1019 tax return with H&R Block. She said her 2019 tax refund was directly deposited into her bank account and when the first round of stimulus payments went out, that money also was also deposited without any issue.

The second round of stimulus payments has been going out for about a week.

Wondering where hers might be, she logged on to the IRS website where she discovered the payment had already been distributed – but much to her surprise was deposited into a different account.

“I was terrified,” Patcher said. “I thought that somebody, they’d sent it to somebody else’s account. So, who has my money – the money that I’ve been waiting for, you know?”

Emily said H&R Block told her that it is an issue affecting people who had their H&R Block filing fees deducted from their 2019 tax refunds.

The KSL Investigators heard from other H&R Block customers who also had their filing fees deducted from their tax refunds in 2019.

A statement to KSL-TV from the H&R Block Media Desk said, “H&R Block understands stimulus checks are vitally important for millions of Americans. The IRS determines where second stimulus payments were sent, and in some cases, money was sent to a different account than the first stimulus payment last spring. We immediately deposited millions of stimulus payments to customers’ bank accounts and onto our Emerald Prepaid Mastercard® yesterday, and all direct deposits are being processed. If the IRS Get My Payment website displays an account number a customer doesn’t recognize, H&R Block customer service agents are ready to help with additional information at 800-HRBLOCK and @HRBlockAnswers on Twitter.”
