Rocky Mountain Power Warns Of Possible Power Interruptions

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – Rocky Mountain Power has issued a warning ahead of forecasted winter storms this weekend.
The power company warns that incoming storms could cause power disturbances.
The issue has to do with last week’s brown snow, which contained pollutants, dust and salt.
Power equipment on major system assets that supply power to customers along the Wasatch Front was coated with the particulate-laden snow.
“Light precipitation causes the accumulation of dust and particles to become conductive, sometimes resulting in arcing and sparking, which can create power interruptions,” the company said.
The brown snow event has already been linked to several power disturbances in the Salt Lake Valley, according to Rocky Mountain Power.
Crews have been working to power-wash transmission line insulators via helicopters, and the power company expects heavier rain and snow will help address the remaining contaminated equipment.
RMP officials “anticipate possible interruptions over the next 24 hours,” according to a statement. “Additional crews will also be working through the night to ensure faster response to possible interruptions.”
