St. George Apartment Fire Displaces Occupants In 6 Units

ST. GEORGE, Utah — The occupants in six units of an apartment complex in St. George were all displaced after a fire broke out in the building.

The incident happened at the Summer Hill Apartments, located at 1279 West 360 North, just after 7 p.m. Friday.

St. George Fire Chief Robert Stoker said residents and passerby reported seeing smoke and flames coming from one of the upstairs apartment units.

When firefighters and law enforcement arrived, they found everyone had evacuated themselves.

Stoker said the original unit where the fire started had “heavy fire throughout the unit” which spread through the attic and to neighboring attics in the building.

“There was some damage to the other upstairs apartment unit — we had to pull some ceilings to access some fire in the attic,” said Stoker.

The units below sustained smoke and water damage, but an exact estimate of damages was not immediately known.

Stoker said the structure of the building itself was sound, with the exception of a few burnt trusses, however, one unit was completely destroyed.

Luckily, no injuries were reported.

The Red Cross assisted several of the occupants find places to stay, while others stayed with family members or friends.

The cause was under investigation, but Stoker said it was most likely accidental.
