Rescue Crews Issue Warning After Hikers Stranded In Snow, Ice

OGDEN, Utah – Members of the Weber County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team spent hours rescuing two stranded hikers in Beus Canyon Tuesday. Despite having appropriate equipment, the hikers became stranded when they hiked into deep snow and the sun was getting ready to set.
WCSO Lt. Mark Horton said hypothermia was starting to set in by the time crews reached them. He said they were higher than crews originally thought, and two climb crews hiked steep terrain in deep snow to reach the duo.
Due to the cold temperatures, they opted for a helicopter rescue with help from the Utah Department of Public Safety.

“The two were pretty prepared,” Horton said. “They just got into a situation where they had gotten into a little bit of trouble.”
Horton said the weather catches people off guard this time of year.
“It’s pretty cold in the morning and then the sun comes out in the afternoon and you think it’s going to be great,” Horton said. “As soon as that sun starts to go down, the temperatures just plummet.”
He said people need to, at the very least, take a jacket, and plan for the warmth and the cold.
In this case, the hikers were able to call 911 for help and a drone provided live, minute-by-minute updates for families waiting at the base of the trailhead.
