SALT LAKE CITY — Eleven anti-mask protestors have been criminally charged for disrupting a Granite District Board Of Education meeting that took place on May 4, 2021.

According to a statement from Ben Horsely, spokesperson for the Granite School District, the South Salt Lake City Attorney filed charges last week.

“Because many of the individuals were not associated with the district as patrons or residents, there was an extended amount of time needed to identify the perpetrators as part of this investigation,” read the statement.

The following people have been charged:

  • Ted Michael Tyler – Taylorsville
  • Scott Randall Sherner – West Valley City
  • Debora Noriko Arai – West Valley City
  • Sophia Anderson – Salt Lake City
  • Angela Kay Van Leeuwen – Salt Lake City
  • Andrea May Jorgensen – Hollady
  • Bernadette Ethel Brockman – Taylorsville
  • Jeremy Kawika Dunyon – West Valley City
  • Kasey Ray Wilson – West Jordan
  • Sara Lea McArthur (also known as Sara McArthur Pierce) – American Fork
  • Kaleb Jeremiah Pierce – American Fork

A twelfth suspect has not been identified, according to the district’s statement, and police are looking for information as to who that person is.

The district said the disruption started after a woman was not allowed to address the board during the meeting.

The 11 charged are accused of being disruptive, shouting and protesting school mask mandates.

Under Utah law, disrupting a public meeting is a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
