Sandy bakery set to reopen after devastating burglary

SANDY, Utah — The owner of a bakery was hoping somebody might be able to solve a burglary that shut down the business for multiple days.
Ai Tanaka said she showed up Saturday morning to Conte De Fee, 7695 S. 700 East, to find broken glass and a raided cash register and refrigerator.
“They took some of our ingredients like strawberries and butter,” Tanaka said. “They took our paper towels, too.”
A computer and camera were also stolen, Tanaka said.

Tanaka said she never expected to have her business burglarized in what has been a nice commercial development and area of town.
She said it was a longtime dream to open the bakery with her business partner and baking reminded her of her childhood in Japan.
Tanaka said she often finds herself working 12-hour days at the bakery and the impact of the burglary has been significant.
“I feel very, like, sad and disappointed,” Tanaka said. “To be honest, the staff and I have no idea what to do.”
A GoFundMe account* was set up to help offset the costs associated with the break-in.
Conte De Fee was expected to reopen Friday.
It appeared surveillance cameras in the area were not able to capture the suspect or suspects. A spokesman for the Sandy Police Department urged anyone with information to call dispatch at 801-799-3000.
Tanaka said one of her reasons for sharing what happened to her business is so that others would be aware of what could potentially happen in an area that appears safe.
“This kind of stuff happens in their neighborhood,” Tanaka said. “We are all kind of like scared of it, so I think we’ll be more cautious and I think that’s what everybody should do.”
