Heavy snow downs trees, power lines across Cache Valley

Oct 12, 2021, 8:38 PM | Updated: 9:41 pm

LOGAN, Utah — Homeowners and city workers in Logan spent all day cleaning up the mess from an overnight storm that brought heavy, heavy snow to parts of northern and southern Utah.

As of 6 p.m., they were still a lot of downed branches and tress all over the Cache Valley.

Because the trees still have leaves on them, that allowed the snow to pile on and weigh them down.

Most of us are familiar with October snowfall, but rarely do you see it with such a widespread mess.

“It’s wet and heavy, so it’s definitely wreaked some havoc,” said Kelby Johnson.

That’s one way to put it.

Branches ripped off of trees all over the place. In some cases, bringing down power lines with them, giving a lot of people a surprising punch with that first snow of the season.

“So, this being the first time, it was crazy to get this much,” said Hannah Bird. “Definitely wasn’t expecting it.”

Thousands of homeowners, like Bird, were left without power Tuesday morning.

Crews with Rocky Mountain Power worked through the day, as did workers with Logan City.

Each of them ran from one problem to the next.

“I started hearing a lot of like, crashes and bangs,” said Christie Maughan.

Maughan got a rude awakening very early this morning.

“And then about 4:30, I heard just this loud crash,” she said.

Her daughter let her know it was a tree poking through the ceiling.

“It always snows at least once before Halloween, at least here in Logan, right? We’re used to that,” said Maughan. “I’m not an expert, but I’m guessing the fact that it was so heavy and wet, and the leaves were still on the trees, right, there’s a lot of damage all around town.”

That’s no exaggeration. The branches and trees seem to be everywhere. But what people are seeing a lot of, too, is plenty of free help.

“We have awesome neighbors who are already planning on getting everybody together and just starting to clean up,” said Maughan. “That’s really all you can do, right?”

Classes were cancelled in the Logan School District Tuesday, while four schools closed in the Cache School District.

Just before 8 p.m., Rocky Mountain Power officials posted to social media, saying, “Our crews continue working around the clock to make repairs and restore service as safely and quickly as possible.”

Updated information on outages can be found on their website.
