Woods Cross HS breaking ground on homeless center

WOODS CROSS, Utah — A teen resource center for students experiencing homelessness is being built at Woods Cross High School. Groundbreaking ceremonies were scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
The Woods Cross Teen Center, which is funded 100 percent by the community, will provide those in need with a safe place to do laundry, shower and study. Access to critical resources will also be provided.
Davis County’s first teen center opened in April 2021 at Clearfield High School serves 50-60 students per week. Additional facilities are under construction at Layton High, Northridge High, Mountain High and the Renaissance Academy.
“The teen center at Woods Cross High School will serve our students in a variety of ways, providing safety and dignity,” said school principal Deanne Kapetanov. “Students will be more able to focus on their schoolwork with these resources. We appreciate the generous donors who have made this dream a reality. Our community is a better place, thanks to wonderful people who care about our youth.”
The Davis School District has approximately 1,300 homeless students, including 300 in high school.
“The community has stepped up in a huge way to support students experiencing homelessness at Woods Cross High,” said Jodi Lunt, executive director of the Davis Education Foundation. “These children face unimaginable challenges and this center will provide them with a place to consistently receive assistance and take care of some of their most basic needs.”
The Woods Cross building will be completed by the end of the school year.
