Infant killed in van rollover in Utah’s Weber Canyon

Dec 22, 2021, 5:36 PM | Updated: 10:14 pm

An infant was ejected and killed when a van rolled while it was heading west on Interstate 84 in Utah’s Weber Canyon.

The van, a white Honda Odyssey was heading west and lost control when it hit some black ice on Tuesday, Dec. 21. The vehicle spun off the right side of the road and rolled with its five occupants. The 7-month-old baby boy was ejected and sustained critical injuries and died after he was transported to the hospital.

The Utah Department of Public Safety said it does not appear that the car seat was used correctly.

Three of the five people in the van suffered minor injuries, along with the little boy’s fatal injuries. The Utah Highway Patrol is not releasing the names of those traveling currently but said they were a family from Evanston, Wyoming.

Lanes were closed for the investigation of the crash.

There have been numerous crashes along this stretch of I-84 near the Weber and Morgan county lines. “We’ve run about 15 wrecks in the canyon roughly since over the weekend up to last night,” said Chief Brian Brendel from the Mountain Green Fire Protection District.

“I personally never go through that canyon more than 55 miles an hour roughly just because I think it’s a good practice with all the curves and all the semis and all the other vehicles that are in there,” he added.

The canyon and much of northeastern Utah are under a winter warning with heavy snow expected.

The National Weather Service Salt Lake City office said, “The period of heaviest snowfall is expected Thursday evening through Friday morning, and could impact peak holiday travel times.”

It is advised that anyone who must travel should keep a flashlight, extra food at extra water in their vehicle. For current road conditions visit udottraffic.utah.gov/roadweatherforecast.aspx.
