SALT LAKE CITY — A single-family home in Salt Lake City has been partially destroyed due to a fire.

The incident began in the area of 800 West and 100 South around 1:30 p.m. Monday.

Capt. Anthony Burton with the Salt Lake City Fire Department said when crews first arrived, they saw heavy smoke and flames coming from the entire structure.

“Conditions that were so hot and so violent in nature that the survivability factor inside that structure was very little, and the danger to firefighters was extremely high,” Burton said. “So, we started to fight that fire aggressively from the outside in a defensive posture.”

Burton said it quickly escalated to a two-alarm fire, which meant that additional firefighters were called out.

Around 2:30 p.m., the SLCFD posted a video to social media, showing flames and plumes of black smoke coming from the roof of the home. In the tweet, fire officials said the roof had partially collapsed in two different spots.

“That is a danger to our firefighters, so we’re actually letting the roof structure burn itself, essentially consume itself, to put it one way,” Burton said. “That fire is eating the roof structure to allow us to attack it again with our aerial master streams from the ladders.”

No injuries to civilians or firefighters have been reported, according to Burton.

He also said the home was vacant at the time the fire started.

“We do thank the community for calling it in early. They noticed the fire. We had multiple 911 calls. And that got us here quickly so that we could protect the surrounding structures,” Burton said.

100 South has been closed just east of 900 West, according to Burton, while crews fight the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
