Utahns have 66.7 million new reasons to visit state unclaimed property website

SALT LAKE CITY – Utah Treasurer Marlo M. Oaks announced the Utah Unclaimed Property Division took in another $66.7 million in lost money and tangible property at the end of 2021.
The money and property come from forgotten bank accounts, overpaid medical bills, safe deposit boxes, and unclaimed insurance benefits.
“We encourage Utahns to check mycash.utah.gov every year to see if they have lost money to claim. Take five minutes this National Unclaimed Property Day to search for property belonging to you, your friends and your relatives,” Treasurer Oaks said. “We receive tens of millions of dollars in new unclaimed property each year, so even if you have searched our online database for unclaimed property in the past, check again.”
The state tries to reach out to people who have unclaimed property. State workers focus on finding Utahns who are owed the largest amounts, in the tens of thousands of dollars.
The KSL Investigators also reported recently on a new tool to get money into the hands of people who, perhaps, need it the most.

They created a map-based program that for the first time allowed them to see just how much money was owed to folks in various neighborhoods and they targeted those areas with billboards and mailers.
