Two teens and then multiple rescuers fall through ice

OGDEN, Utah—Rescuers fell through the ice after attempting to help two males, ages 17 and 19, who had broken through the ice at 21st Street Pond, 650 West 20th Street.

Just before noon, Weber Dispatch received a call that two males had fallen through the ice. When officers arrived they found one of the males was able to get himself out of the water, but the other was still trapped in the ice.

Two officers got onto the ice to attempt a rescue of the second male and fell through the ice. At that point, Weber County Deputies responded to assist and also ended up in the icy water.

“Our biggest concern is hypothermia. It can set in almost immediately,” Ogden Spokesperson, Will Farr said. “We don’t know why they were out on the water.. but found out the teenagers have autism…we don’t know if contributed to the incident or not.”

The Ogden Police Facebook post states, “After much effort, officers were able to rescue the victim from the ice. None of the officers or persons involved had significant injuries.”

Ogden Police reminded citizens to be cautious around frozen bodies of water and said in this season of ever-changing weather, it is uncertain as to the integrity of the ice.

“We have at least one of these rescues every year.”
