Ogden organization in need of donations to help feed students

OGDEN, Utah — A local organization that helps feed hungry students says it’s struggling to get donations this year.

Every year, Catholic Community Services in Ogden puts together a bundle of food called “pantry packs” to feed students during the weekend when they’re not in school.

They have enough to last through March but will need help from the community beyond that.

Catholic Community Services receives pantry packs — a gallon ziplock bag with six meals and four snacks — from the public already packaged and ready to deliver to schools in Ogden.

“It’s easily and discreetly put in a child’s backpack,” said Durrell Annis with Catholic Community Services of Utah.

The group usually receives 3,500 to cover an entire school year, but donations have slowed down since the new year.

“Maybe people are just tight because of COVID. I had one gentleman mention he was only able to find 10 ramen so be brought 10 of them and gave them to us,” said Annis.

Annis said hundreds of kids rely on pantry packs, and generous donations from Utahns can help them fight hunger year-round.

“There are studies that have been that show when kids are hungry it’s so much harder for them to focus and to learn,” Annis said.

If you’re interested in donating any or all food items to fill a pantry pack, contact Durrell Annis at dannis@ccsutah.org or 801-428-1291.

CCS will take assembled packs or their volunteers can put them together for you. They say it’s a great family or group project that takes a couple of hours and it could really go a long way.
