6 suspects arrested for ATM theft of $80,000 following chase

ST. GEORGE, Utah— Six suspects were put in jail after allegedly breaking an ATM at a bank branch on Sunset Blvd according to court documents.

St. George Police responded to a bank alarm and found a torn apart ATM and the bank reported over $80,000 missing. Surveillance video captured a white ford truck pulled up with chains to pull apart the ATM with four people wearing black clothing.

A white truck matching the truck in the video was found still running and abandoned in another part of town. Police contacted the registered owner of the truck and found out the truck had been stolen from behind a business on Sunset Blvd.

The truck had damage on the rear bumper from where it pulled the ATM and damage to the ignition where it had been started without using a key. The estimated damage costs to the truck were $1,500-5,000.

A Hurricane officer had witnessed two sedans leaving Hurricane just prior the burglary and then returning soon after the ATM theft. The officer attempted a traffic stop on both vehicles since neither had their license plates displayed. The officer was able to stop the rear vehicle and found two male occupants wearing black clothing. One of the occupants told the officer they were staying at a motel in Hurricane in room 114.

These occupants were identified as Reginald Simmons and Quamaine Edwards.

Officers were able to locate the other sedan at the motel and witnessed as one person threw some things in a dumpster. Then the sedan pulled out with five people inside. Police attempted a traffic stop but the car evaded police until it crashed on Smith Mesa Rd.

According to court documents, “Inside the vehicle, officers located a gray Swiss bag inside the cabin and found multiple loose $20 bills consistent with what would be found in an ATM.”

Officers later collected items of black clothing and shoes from the motel dumpster. The shoes’ tread matched the footprints found at the bank.

“Once the Honda had crashed, five subjects fled on foot from the vehicle: Marcus McLemore, Savon Hamilton, Dayleon Garrett, Lawerence Dennis, and Tyree Smith were all taken into custody and transported to the hospital for medical clearances.”

The suspects were questioned and admitted to certain parts in the theft. Responding officers located debris consistent with ATM components and about $1,000 in cash in the area.

After verifying identities, officers found that all were from either Texas or Louisiana. None had ties to Utah.

Court documents state, “During an interview of Edwards and Simmons, both confessed they had also been involved in two recent Las Vegas bank burglary attempts.”

Six of the seven people involved were arrested on suspicion of theft, burglary, criminal mischief, and failure to stop at the command of law enforcement.
