One dead after auto-pedestrian crash in West Valley City

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah — Police say one person is dead following an auto-pedestrian crash near 4000 West and 4500 South.
Lt. Bill Merritt with the West Valley City Police Department said a witness was driving southbound on 4000 West around 1:40 a.m. Tuesday when they saw what they thought was a person lying in the northbound lanes.
The witness turned around to investigate when a northbound car struck the person.
“We are still trying to figure out exactly what happened,” Merritt said. “It appears that the person was, in fact, lying in the middle of the road… we don’t know if it was a medical issue; we don’t know if it was an intoxication issue.”
Merritt added the area is poorly lit, and there are no marked crosswalks in the area. The driver who struck the person remained at the scene and fully cooperated with officers.
Crews closed 4000 West from 4200 South to 4500 South while investigators were on scene.
It appears 4000 W. is now open to traffic, and police remain on scene

Police did not release the victim’s identity.
