Hiker found dead in Canyonlands National Park

MOAB, Utah — A hiker was found dead after being reported missing Sunday night in Canyonlands National Park.
According to a release from the park, the male hiker was reported overdue after attempting a short hike from Elephant Hill in the Needles District.
A search and rescue team was assembled between Canyonlands and Mesa Verde National Park Service Staff along with San Juan County personnel to locate the hiker.
At 10 a.m. on Tuesday morning, a body matching the description was found near the trailhead.
The body was transferred to the San Juan County Medical Examiner’s Office while an investigation into the incident is being conducted by San Juan County.
The man’s identity was not released and no other details surrounding their death were immediately available.
A release from the park cautions hikers to plan ahead and prepare for extreme heat. All hikers should ensure they are drinking plenty of fluids, eating snacks, traveling in the early morning hours, resting during the heat of the day, and dressing appropriately for the weather.
