SLCC searching for commercial bus drivers

Aug 24, 2022, 12:35 PM

SALT LAKE COUNTY, UtahColleges are gearing up for students to head back to school.

Alongside other schools and institutions across the state, Salt Lake Community College is raising their hands for help as they need bus drivers.

In this case, they’re not talking about your standard yellow school bus. They’re looking for drivers for their charter-like buses that help transport student athletes and other student groups.

Troy Walker, Salt Lake Community College’s fleet and logistics manager, said he needs some help as he is the go-to guy who manages the fleet.

Right now, though, he’s stepping in as a driver with only one other person.

“When COVID hit, that’s when we lost our other drivers. A lot of them retired out of the commercial driving business. Since then, we haven’t been able to hire anyone,” Walker said.

Now, though, the college can.

“Good drivers,” Walker said.

They’re looking to fill two part-time on-call bus drivers who can work a shift, something like Wednesday through Saturday or Sunday, three to four weeks out of the month.

Walker said on average, they run about 120 trips per year. Some are local — four to six hours — while others are multi-day as they go out of state for competitions or games.

As for qualifications, he’s looking for drivers with a Class A or B commercial driver license, including passenger, air brake, with a little experience, preferably one to two years motor coach or driving a school district bus.

That and the given, including a clean driving record.

“Fifty-six people on a bus, it’s hard to maneuver within the city, but also, where are they wanting to go on other school grounds?” Walker said.

He said they need to fill these driving slots sooner rather than later as their athletic events start this week.
