Utah’s PGA star Tony Finau shares his tips for success at Boys & Girls Club

FRUIT HEIGHTS, Utah —  Some young golfers took home tips and life lessons from Tony Finau Tuesday.

It was a big deal for people at the Davis Park Golf Course.

Finau’s golf tips were surely helpful but there’s at least one important life lesson he shared that pushed him to where he is today.

“I think goals are huge, just so you can visualize them,” Finau said.

Not only goals but persistence. It’s something you might have noticed in Tony Finau’s record this season.

“They say a winner is just a loser that’s kept on trying, and that’s me, to a tee,” he said.

Coach Boyd Summerhays said, “One of Tony’s greatest strengths is his mind and his attitude.”

It’s a mindset he said that makes Finau a finisher.

“He’s so busy but he’s been a great support to the Boys & Girls Club,” Summerhays said.

Finau volunteered Tuesday at a charity outing for the Boys & Girls Club of Weber-Davis. Summerhays and his golfing family have done this for nine years.

“We were getting a little work in, getting ready for the President’s Cup for him and he’s like ‘Hey, I’d love to come down and do the clinic.’ And I was honored at that,” he said.

This year sponsors brought in nearly $1 million for the Boys & Girls Club.

Even though it was pouring rain, Finau shared a bit of technique and a lot of the principle that pulled him ahead in a season that started out bad.

“It wasn’t the year that I had wanted up to that point, But I knew we still had a lot of golf to be played,” Finau said.

He stayed focused and pushed against what might have looked like difficult odds for some clutch wins.

“And I played some great golf the second half of the season and was able to knock down a couple of wins and qualify by points for the President’s Cup, which is another goal,” he explained.

This was the ninth annual Summerhays Golf Charity Outing.

The money raised will help with eight Boys & Girls Club sites in Ogden. Two more are on the way.
