Suspect dead, officer injured after South Salt Lake shooting

UPDATE: The suspect was identified Wednesday as 44-year-old Jebb Muir.

Officials with the South Salt Lake City Police Department say next of kin has been notified.

SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah — One person is dead and a South Salt Lake police officer was injured after shots were fired early Tuesday morning.

Danielle Croyle, public information officer for the South Salt Lake Police Department, said officers were called out to the area of 400 East and Robert Avenue after receiving reports of a man with a gun.

As officers approached the scene, police say gunfire was exchanged between two officers and the suspect.

Croyle said the suspect was killed and one officer was injured. The officer was taken to an area hospital in stable condition before being discharged later Tuesday morning.

“We are very pleased to report that he has since been released and he’s going to be home recuperating,” Croyle said.

The other involved officer was uninjured in the shooting.

Neighbors who live along Robert Avenue heard the situation unfold, with some watching out their windows.

Leo Shivers said he could hear metal rattling, later realizing it was a bicycle the man was riding likely dropping to the ground.

“He was on his bike, and everything and so, they told him to drop his gun,” Shivers said.

Shivers and his sons heard several gunshots ring out, and that’s when Shivers looked to see what was going on.

“To just come upstairs, look out the window and see somebody die right in front of you, that’s kind of disturbing,” Shivers said. Officers went up to the man, and an ambulance and fire truck arrived.

“They started checking out the one cop, checking his head and everything, see if he got grazed by a bullet or something,” Shivers said.

Another neighbor down the street also heard the shots, and looked outside to see police surrounding the area following the shooting. She explained that she later found out the man killed lives near her.

“He’s got a story, and I just hope that we know what the story is– like what led up to what happened last night, and that’s there’s a family grieving somewhere,” she said.

Croyle said a Salt Lake County-wide critical incident team will handle the investigation.

“If somebody may have seen or heard something last night before midnight that is related to this, somebody who may be living in the 300 block of Robert (Avenue), everyone is encouraged to call in,” Croyle said.
