TAYLORSVILLE, Utah — A man was shot in the back of his head in a road rage incident Thursday afternoon causing a road closure at Redwood Road southbound near 5800 South and Interstate 215.

The man is in stable condition and expected to survive.

Taylorsville Police Department received several calls about a road rage incident just after 1:30 p.m at 1800 West and 6200 South.

According to Sgt. Jake Hill, two cars: a white passenger car and a silver SUV, believed to be a gray or silver GMC, were headed eastbound on 6200 South. Both cars turned onto Redwood Road.

“As they were going north witnesses were reporting the occupants of the gray SUV reached out through the passenger window and fired several shots,” said Sgt. Jake Hill, Taylorsville Police Department.

A woman was in traffic on Redwood Road and witnessed the road rage escalate. She asked to remain anonymous.

“I was about to enter 215 when I heard two gunshots, it was really scary because it was really close to me, then I saw this white car jump over south bound lanes and hit other cars and went under the bridge and crash,” said the witness.

It’s not clear how many shots were fired, but Hill said it was multiple shots.

A 30-year-old man, driving the white sedan, was struck in the back of the head and as a result, crashed his car just under the I-215 overpass.

“Right now he’s at a local hospital, he did have a gunshot wound to what we believe is the back of the head,” Sgt. Hill said.

Sgt. Hill says the silver or gray SUV quickly sped away from the scene, but it’s unknown if the vehicle got onto I-215 or continued into the Taylorsville area on Redwood Road.

“If anyone happen to be in the area at the time and saw or was able to obtain any information on the silver SUV we’re asking that they call dispatch and give us that information,” said Sgt. Hill.

Taylorsville Police say there were at least two people in the silver or gray SUV.

Police are now checking with businesses and homes in the area hoping to locate some sort of surveillance video showing the vehicles.

Southbound of Redwoood Road 5800 S and I-215 were closed for several hours.
