PAYSON — A woman was released from a hospital and booked into jail Wednesday after police say she barged into her estranged husband’s home, shot a woman and threatened to kill her, then shot herself as officers moved in to arrest her.

Shaina Cary Hold, 32, was booked into the Utah County Jail for investigation of multiple potential charges, including attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, aggravated assault resulting in serious injury, two counts of assault, and discharge of a gun in city limits.

On Dec. 22, Payson police were called to 532 W. Saddlebrook Drive after a woman called 911 “yelling that she had been held at gunpoint. While en route to the location, officers were advised one individual had been shot, screaming was heard in the background,” according to a police booking affidavit.

Police discovered a woman with a gunshot to the leg inside the house. They also heard a man calling from the basement who was “holding a female … kind of in a bear hug,” according to Payson police. The woman was still holding a gun, and as police tried to help the man subdue her, “she was able to maneuver the gun and shoot herself” in the head.

As detectives investigated the events leading up to the shooting, they learned that a protective order had been issued on Oct. 22 against Hold, not allowing her to be at that residence. Hold’s husband filed for divorce from her in May, according to court records.

On Dec. 16, police were notified that Hold “had sent messages through social media indicating that she was going to kill (the woman her estranged husband was with) and spread body parts from Payson to Mexico. This would indicate that Shaina had premeditated ideations on killing (the woman),” the affidavit alleges.

Less than a week later, on Dec. 22, when Hold showed up at the house, she ran into a room that her estranged husband and the other woman were in and allegedly pointed her gun at him. But as the woman attempted to run, she was shot by Holt in the left thigh and Hold “began yelling that she would shoot her again,” according to the affidavit.

Police say Hold shot the woman as she was calling 911. Even after being shot, the woman attempted to call 911 again, prompting Hold to hit the woman in the back of her head with the gun, the affidavit states.

As Hold’s estranged husband attempted to take the gun away from her, Hold bit his hand, according to police. He then held her in the basement until officers arrived.
