Woman critically injured, suspected gunman found dead after SLC shooting

SALT LAKE CITY — A 57-year-old woman was hospitalized in critical but stable condition after she was shot Thursday night and police said the suspected gunman was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot.

Officials with the Salt Lake City Police Department said they are investigating this shooting as an attempted murder and death by suicide.

Police said a family member found the woman bleeding inside a duplex near Princeton Avenue and Lake Street, just east of Liberty Park, and called 911.

Paramedics transported the woman to a local hospital and doctors called police for help investigating the woman’s injury, which was later determined to be a gunshot wound.

SLC police said on-scene medical personnel did not suggest anything criminal in nature, so officers were not dispatched to the scene until after the hospital called them.

At the duplex, officers searched the victim’s residence for evidence and to see if anyone else in the home needed assistance.

After going through the woman’s residence, police attempted to contact the resident living in the other half of the duplex after learning that person “had potential information about the woman’s injury and may have been the suspect.”

However, they received no response after calling the person and using a loudspeaker outside the duplex.

SLCPD spokesperson Brett Weisberg said a court-authorized search warrant was executed around 8 a.m. Friday by a SWAT team. Police did not say what prompted the SWAT response but Weisberg said there was no threat to the public and police had “identified everyone associated with this incident.”

“During the search, the SLCPD SWAT Team located the suspect dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside his half of the duplex,” police said in a press release. “Both the victim and shooter are known to each other, and this was not a random incident.”

Family members outside the residence told KSL TV the two people living in the duplex were brother and sister. That person said he believed there was an argument that escalated.

Police confirmed that relationship with KSL. The name of the 72-year-old man has not yet been released.

After securing the duplex, SWAT turned the scene over to detectives for processing.
