Son dead, father hurt in a shooting and stabbing in Wasatch County

UPDATE: The two people involved have been identified as Warick Daugaard, 25, and Eric Daugaard, 53.
The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office said in a release:
“Preliminary indications suggest that Eric was stabbed multiple times by Warick. Eric retrieved a firearm to defend himself, shooting and injuring Warick. While the Medical Examiner determines the official cause of death, preliminary indications also suggest that Warick succumbed to a self-inflicted wound caused by an edged weapon.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends affected by this tragedy.”

WASATCH COUNTY, Utah — One man was killed and another was critically injured Monday night, according to deputies with the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said they were called to Swiss Mountain Estates, a cabin area west of Midway, around 6:30 p.m. Monday after two 911 callers reported a man had been stabbed and another had been shot.
According to a release from Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office, 25-year-old Warick Daugaard stabbed his father, 53-year-old Eric Daugaard, multiple times.
Witnesses told police the father defended himself using a firearm.
First responders found and assisted the 53-year-old, who was airlifted to an area hospital in critical condition. The 25-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A day after it happened, neighbors were struggling to make sense of it.
“You can’t explain it, you can’t,” neighbor Dale Mickelson said.
Mickelson says the chain of events two doors down stunned everyone, from those who knew the family to a stranger working construction here.
“He said that he heard a scream and then crying and he said the police came right after that,” Dale Mickelson said.
Neighbors say they are heartbroken by the news.
“Just feel so bad for them. They’re such good people,” Valene Mickelson said. “And whatever happened…we still love them, you know?”
As the Mickelsons come to terms, they hope for more answers and understanding.
On Wednesday, police said Warick died from a self-inflicted wound by an edged weapon.
Wasatch County Fire District crews also responded to the scene.
