KEARNS, Utah – Utah Jazz shooting guard Donovan Mitchell spoke to students at an invitation-only assembly at Kearns High School to recognize them for high achievement.
Mitchell surprised the NBA with his play as a rookie, and the surprises continue during the offseason. Whether it’s crashing Fourth of July pool parties or signing shoes for a cancer patient at a restaurant.
His appearance at Kearns High Tuesday morning surprised the students there, but also helped many prepare for the new school year.
“We see your hard work,” he told the students. “I’ve been working hard my whole life and you’ve clearly been doing the same. So I say we just get right to it and give you guys your stuff. I’m really proud of you guys and thank you for letting us do this.”
Mitchell had some gifts for students at the school who were nominated by teachers for good deeds and dramatic grade improvements.
He wanted to inspire students at a local school to excel. Students in attendance were given backpacks and t-shirts.
There was also a trivia contest where some students won Skull Candy headphones and t-shirts. Some even left with signed shoes.
Mitchell said he planned to follow up and do something at the school once a month.
