Promontory Fire Grows To 1,000 Acres; Doppler Radar Protected

PROMONTORY, Utah – A new wildfire has burned an estimated 1,000 acres near Promontory Point and threatened a doppler radar station that covers northern Utah, fire officials said.
The Promontory Fire was reported Saturday afternoon and its cause is currently unknown.
State wildfire officials said air and ground resources have been called in to battle the blaze. Those crews said they were able to protect the radar station, which is used by the KSL Weather Team.

The NWS office in Salt Lake City “operates and maintains two WSR-88D Doppler RADAR stations. One covers much of northern Utah and is located near Promontory Point. Another covers southwestern Utah and is located near Cedar Breaks National Monument.”

Elberta Fire Estimated Around 2,000 Acres
The Elberta Fire has grown to an estimated 1,982 acres in southwest Utah County, according to fire officials. Its cause is unknown and it did receive significant rainfall overnight. Crews had achieved 10% containment as of Saturday afternoon.
Old Pinery Fire Contained
The Old Pinery Fire was reported near Nephi and threatened structures as high winds fanned its flames Friday.
Officials said significant rainfall in the area helped suppress the fire, which was fully contained Saturday at 200 acres. No structures were damaged.
