Moran Eye Center patient information compromised

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – If you are a patient or parent of a patient at the Moran Eye Center at the University of Utah Hospital you may want to keep an eye on your credit report.

The Moran Eye Center wrote in a press release that some basic patient information may be compromised and officials are currently notifying five adults and the parents or guardians of 602 infants of a “potential disclosure” containing personal information.

“We reported to police that we were missing a laptop and an associated external storage device on April 3, 2018,” Elizabeth Neff, associate director of public relations and communications, said in an interview with KSL Newsradio.

The laptop and storage device, which Neff says were taken from locked storage, were used to conduct retinal imaging at the University of Utah Hospital and Primary Children’s Medical Center. She said it didn’t contain social security numbers or any type of patient financial information.

“The types of information it did contain were retinal images, a full or partial name, a date of birth, and a medical reference number,” she said.

The medical reference number, according to Neff, is only used to identify records within the university’s secured records system. Because of the very limited nature of this information, she said the possibility of identity theft is very low. They also haven’t received any reports of misuse of personal information.

“We do understand, even knowing that, there are some patients, some parents, that might still have concerns, and for that reason we are offering free credit monitoring. And, we have set up a toll-free hotline where patients can call in and get information on how to enroll.”

The press release states patients can call 855-349-6456 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with any questions, or to receive information about enrollment.

Neff said it’s important for people to be informed about the incident accurately.

“We don’t think there’s any cause for people to be concerned about their social security number or their financial data. We want to inform, just not panic anyone.”
