Woman Critically Injured At BYU In Four Floor Fall

PROVO, Utah – A woman was in critical condition after she fell down four stories at the N. Eldon Tanner Building on the BYU campus, prompting the university to close the building and cancel classes for the day.
Several students witnessed what happened Monday morning. Free counseling services were being offered in the Wilkinson Student Center, room 1500.

“We did have a student fall from the fourth floor. This is an ongoing police investigation, so I am limited in what I can say right now,” said university spokesperson Carri Jenkins. “We immediately made counseling available in this building to our students, we also have counseling available for our campus community.”
This morning a tragic incident occurred in the Tanner Building involving one of our students.
Help is available to our campus community. Counselors are available at 750 Tanner Building and at the Counseling Center at 1500 Wilkinson Student Center.

The incident occurred as the building was filled with students in classrooms and the commons area of the building. The woman fell in the atrium, which connects the two wings of the building.
Police determined the fall was intentional.
Officers from the BYU Police Department investigated for more than an hour. Just after 11 a.m. a decision was made by the university to cancel classes and close the building for the remainder of the day.
“This tragic incident did involve a student. We have closed the building and classes have been canceled, and we have as well as alerting our staff and community through social media,” Jenkins said.
A tweet from the university asked for faculty members to be sensitive to students impacted by the incident, particularly those students who witnessed what happened.
