Police Release Identity Of Teen Suspect Killed By Ogden Police

OGDEN, Utah – The identity of the teenage suspect killed by officers from the Ogden Police Department has been released. Officials said 18-year-old Anthony Ray Borden-Cortez was killed after pointing what turned out to be a BB gun at officers.

Officials said Borden-Cortez fled from officers in a stolen car Tuesday. After coming to a stop at the intersection of 12th Street and Depot Drive, responding officers said the Ogden teen pointed a rifle at them.

The officers then discharged their firearms. Borden-Cortez was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Police later discovered that rifle was a BB gun.

Investigators were tracking Borden-Cortez and another suspect after information they got about armed robberies in Woods Cross, Roy, Layton and Ogden.

“This suspect was armed, dangerous, and willing to shoot it out with officers,” said Ogden Chief Deputy of Police Eric Young. “Firearms were used to threaten the clerks in each of the robberies. In one instance, the clerk was struck with a pistol.”

Ogden police were helping Woods Cross detectives track down Borden- Cortez at an apartment complex Tuesday when he came out around 3 p.m. and left in a stolen car. Police had placed a device on that car that flattened a tire.

During a short chase, officials said Borden-Cortez hit several cars in the busy intersection before coming to a stop.

“An Ogden detective ordered the suspect to exit the vehicle,” said Young. “The suspect pointed a gun at the officer. The officer fired several shots striking the suspect.“

Police later found out the rifle was a BB gun.

“It had every appearance of a rifle,” said Young.

Officials from the Ogden Police Department said they were thankful their officer was alive on the same day another Utah department was honoring an officer killed in the line of duty.

“Trust me when I say our officers don’t want to deal with these kinds of situations,” Chief Young said. “They don’t want to be put in these types of situations. Their families do not want to be put in these types of these situations. It’s hard on the officers. It’s hard of the families,. It’s hard in the department.”

Ogden officers have shot and killed three suspects in the last 25 days in completely unrelated cases. A team with the Weber County Attorney’s Office was investigating the latest shooting.

Police were still search for one more suspect in the violent armed robberies.
