Ogden Fire Sends 4 To Hospital, Causes $80K In Damages

Jul 2, 2019, 5:59 AM | Updated: 2:09 pm

OGDEN, Utah – Authorities are investigating the cause of a Tuesday-morning fire that displaced seven people and sent four of them to the hospital.

The fire sent residents of a building at 2071 Adams Ave. running just after 5:30 a.m.

“I come out and I see smoke just billowing through the windows,” said Tyler Cooper, who escaped the structure.

Cooper said he normally would have already been at work, but he was running late Tuesday. That ended up being a blessing as he helped his neighbors escape the fire

“I see my neighbor Jeff here jump through his window, and I run to him and call 911,” Cooper said.

He also grabbed his neighbor’s kids and ran to another window to help a woman and small child trying to remove a screen. The woman’s husband followed closely behind her.

“When he came flying through that window, there was just a big puff of black smoke following him,” Cooper said. “He ended up getting a little bit of burn and all that.”

Ogden Fire officials said four people were taken to a nearby hospital. Cooper said one of the four was a small child who suffered smoke inhalation.

Seven people were displaced from three different units. The middle unit was a total loss.

Officials estimate the damage at $80,000.

“We had some complications,” said Ogden Fire Department Deputy Chief Eric Bauman. “We had some power lines down in the back as a result of the fire as well as a gas leak as a result of the fire.”

The gas was turned off and mitigated while crews continued to clean up after a fire that could have been much worse.

“That fire went from something small to something really big,” Cooper said.

OFD authorities said preliminary reports indicate a meter was down in the fire, which caused the gas leak.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
