North Salt Lake To Replace ‘Dummy’ Cameras At Park Where Mackenzie Lueck Was Last Seen

Jul 16, 2019, 10:53 PM

NORTH SALT LAKE, Utah — The camera placed around Hatch Park in North Salt Lake are meant to deter thieves. The ‘dummy’ cameras do not record.

In the case of Mackenzie Lueck, friends feel real cameras could have helped in the investigation.

“I don’t think it would have saved her life but I think it would have given us a lot more evidence,” Ashley Fine, Lueck’s friends said. “It would have saved a lot of tax dollars because the police wouldn’t have had to get as many warrants…and just time, precious time.”

Friends of Mackenzie showed up to voice their opinions during a North Salt Lake City Council meeting Tuesday night. Fine talked raised concerns about security at a park with cameras that don’t actually function.

“It’s just gives people at the park a false sense of security,” she said.

The city council acknowledged the importance of replacing the cameras especially since they have made headlines in this case and since the public is now aware they don’t really record.
North Salt Lake Mayor Len Arave spoke to the group directly and commended their efforts.

“The way they’ve pursued this has been wonderful, very productive and I can’t say enough about them being involved to try and make our communities better,” Mayor Arave.

The city council voted to add 3 to 4 cameras in Hatch Park with a price tag of around $6,000 to $8,000. As for when and where exactly the city will install the new cameras in Hatch Park, Mayor Arave said they would not release that information citing security concerns.
