$25M Miller Coin Collection To Be Auctioned; Proceeds To Help Build Lehi Children’s Hospital

SANTA ANA, Calif. – The $25 million coin collection of the late Larry H. Miller will be auctioned in November and December by California-based Stack’s Bowers Galleries to benefit the construction of Intermountain Healthcare’s Children’s Hospital in Lehi.
Miller died in 2009, and he owned the Utah Jazz for nearly 25 years.
A news release from Stack’s Bowers Galleries said the collection was especially special to Miller and he asked his wife, Gail, to sell the coins at his passing.
“He instructed his wife to sell the coins at his passing, but knowing how much they meant to him, she could not bear to part with them,” auctioneers said. “However, after 11 years, she decided it was time to do something else with the value invested in the collection, and that is what precipitated the sale of this collection.”
The release described the Larry H. Miller coin collection as spectacular.
“Assembled quietly over many decades, the Larry H. Miller Collection comprises an astounding array of rarities that are found only in the most legendary cabinets in U.S. numismatics,” auctioneers said.
The featured coin is an 1804 Draped Bust Silver Dollar, which is valued at $3 million.
Also included:
- 1894-S Barber Dime: Estimated value $1.25 million and up
- 1794 Flowing Hair Silver Dollar: Estimated value $1 million and up
- 1884-S Morgan Silver Dollar. The Finest Known: Estimated value $1 million and up
- 1886-O Morgan Silver Dollar. The Finest Known: Estimated value $750,000 and up
- 1849 Mormon $10 Estimated value $500,000 and up
There are nearly 1,600 coins in the collection. They will be auctioned in two sales scheduled for November 12 and December 17.
“The Stack’s Bowers Galleries sale of the Larry H. Miller Collection will attract advanced collectors across all categories of U.S. numismatics and will be among the most significant numismatic happenings of 2020,” auctioneers said.
Larry H. Miller established several successful businesses, including several car dealerships in western states and the Megaplex chain of movie theaters. He also owned the Utah Jazz and Vivint Arena, which are now under a legacy trust operated by his wife.
He was a lifelong resident of Salt Lake City and a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
