Roy police officer arrested, on leave for alleged child sex abuse

ROY, Utah — A Roy police officer has been arrested and placed on administrative leave on suspicion of child sex abuse.

Ryan A. Estes, 38, was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of two counts of rape of a child and three counts of aggravated sexual abuse of a child.

Police collected testimony from two victims.

According to court documents, both alleged victims were under 14 years of age at the time of their abuse.

One victim said the abuse happened when she was 10 or 11 years old and continued until she was 13.

“Estes continued to sexually abuse her on several other occasions when she was ages 11 to 13 years old,” read the probable cause statement.

The other victim reported abuse at 13, according to court documents.

The investigation and status of Estes’ employment was confirmed by officials with the Roy Police Department.

“Yes [Ryan Estes] is an officer with us, he was placed on admin leave when we learned of this case. He will remain on leave until we have thoroughly evaluated the facts of this case and can make a determination as to his continued employment status,” Roy Police Chief Matthew Gwynn wrote in a text.

Estes is currently being held in Davis County Jail without bail.

Correction: An earlier version indicated Gwynn is a sergeant, but he was appointed as police chief in June.
