Man in critical condition after police shooting; officers uninjured

Nov 8, 2022, 12:24 PM | Updated: May 21, 2023, 4:30 pm

UPDATE: A 37-year-old man is in critical but stable condition following an officer-involved shooting in Salt Lake City.

According to a press release from the Salt Lake City Police Department, the investigation began at 11:32 a.m. when officers responded to a home near 1700 S. 900 East at the request of the Huntsman Mental Health Institute’s Mobile Crisis Outreach Team.

“MCOT requested the assistance of the SLCPD while social workers and a family member contacted the 37-year-old man inside a detached garage,” the release stated.

When officers arrived, they met with the MCOT social workers and the family member and were escorted to the garage. They waited inside, according to the release, while the social workers and the family member spoke with the man.

Police said the suspect reached for a weapon during the incident and both officers fired shots.

Following the shooting, the man was taken into custody, and officers, including the Salt Lake City Fire Department, rendered medical aid.

The man was then transported to the hospital, where his condition is now listed as critical but stable.

Police said there were no other injuries.

“Today, our officers took action to protect two social workers and a family member during an incident that unfolded in a split second,” said SLCPD Chief Mike Brown. “Our officers were asked by social workers to respond to this call for their protection and assistance. These are situations that are never predictable, but our two involved officers relied on their training and experience to protect others and themselves.”

The two officers involved in the shooting are on paid administrative leave, according to police.

OICI Protocol Team Four is leading the investigation into the incident, while the SLCPD Internal Affairs Unit is conducting a separate investigation.

SALT LAKE CITY — Authorities are asking the public to avoid the area of 900 East and 1700 South in Salt Lake City due to a large police presence.

The Salt Lake City Police Department said there is no threat to the public and they are investigating it as an “officer-involved critical incident.”

One person was hospitalized with serious injuries, according to police, and no officers were injured in this incident.

Police have closed 900 East between 1700 South and Wilson Avenue.

A few blocks to the east, one officer suffered minor injuries after being involved in a traffic crash while responding to the scene.

Police told KSL TV that officer was driving an unmarked car, and the crash is under investigation. The injured officer was driven to a nearby hospital by another officer.

The crash portion of the incident will be investigated by another agency.
