New development: Suspect in missing woman case recently failed a polygraph test

Dec 6, 2022, 9:15 PM

WEBER COUNTY, Utah — A suspect in a nearly 40-year-old Utah cold case has refused an offer of immunity from criminal charges.

The Weber County Attorney’s Office made the offer to Cary Hartmann in a letter. The letter said Hartmann could receive immunity in exchange for information about the disappearance of Sheree Warren “and the location of her identifiable remains.”

KSL’s COLD podcast obtained a copy of the immunity offer letter through a public records request.

Hartmann, a former Ogden police reserve officer, served 32 years in prison on an unrelated sexual assault conviction and was released from custody in March of 2020. He received the immunity offer letter during a meeting with a Weber County investigator about a year later, in April of 2021.

The letter said the offer was conditional on Hartmann providing “full, complete and truthful information,” but it did not depend on the successful recovery of Warren’s remains.

“This agreement shall not be void if such remains are not found,” the letter read.

Hartmann declined to sign the letter, which would’ve been necessary to make the offer binding.

Warren disappeared on Oct. 2, 1985, after leaving an office building in Salt Lake City. She was living with her parents in Roy at the time, while pursuing a divorce from her husband, Charles Warren.

Cary Hartmann was dating Sheree Warren at the time of her disappearance. Hartmann has repeatedly denied involvement in Warren’s suspected murder.

Hartmann is currently on parole from his 1987 convictions for aggravated sexual assault and burglary. He was required to submit to a polygraph examination about Warren’s disappearance as a condition of his parole.

“And he did fail that polygraph test,” Roy Police Det. John Frawley told COLD.

KSL requested copies of the polygraph report under Utah’s open records law, but Roy police refused to provide them.

Hartmann has not subsequently been charged with a crime related to Warren’s presumed death. When contacted by KSL, Hartmann referred questions to his attorney. That attorney did not respond to a message seeking comment.

Police also considered Sheree Warren’s ex-husband, Charles Warren, a suspect in the case. He died in October of 2022.
