SOUTH SALT LAKE, Utah – An 18-month-old child has died from his injuries after his mother drove a minivan into a golf course pond late Sunday, police said.
The incident happened shortly after 11 p.m. in the area of 3300 South and 600 West.
Authorities received a report of criminal mischief at approximately 11:15 p.m. when someone spotted the minivan driving around on the golf course.
When police arrived, they found an “incoherent” and “disoriented” woman in the area. Officers made contact with her and then discovered the vehicle partially submerged in the pond, authorities said.
The woman, Brittanie Mae Miloshevsky, 28, of Millcreek, was identified as the driver and mother of the child.
Danielle Croyle, the public information officer for South Salt Lake Police Department, said once officers realized there was a child in the vehicle, they dove into the pond.
Croyle said authorities had to “feel around” for the child inside the minivan.
“They were able to extract the child from the car,” she said.
The infant was transported to Primary Children’s Hospital in critical condition.
He later died from his injuries.
Miloshevsky was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
She faces multiple felony charges, including DUI with serious bodily injury, child abuse, child endangerment and criminal mischief.
Her charges were later amended to child abuse homicide following her son’s death.
