Roy Officers Recognized For Rescuing Three From Burning Home

Dec 4, 2019, 6:11 AM | Updated: 10:33 am

ROY, Utah — Police officers who rescued three people from a burning home last month were recognized by their city Tuesday evening.

The five men — Kyle Curtis, Ryan Estes, Preston Jones, Zach Jones and Cash Ricks — were named employees of the month during a meeting of the Roy City Council.

“This was a great collective effort by responding officers in saving these three individuals,” Roy Police Chief Carl Merino said in a statement read before the council.

On Nov. 4, the officers scrambled to a home near 2100 West and 3900 South that was showing smoke and flames when they arrived.

“Officers pounded on the locked front door, which was immediately adjacent to the engulfed garage,” Marino stated. “One victim — an upstairs resident — was able to find the front door through the smoke due to the officers pounding on it and was helped from the residence at that location. A substantial amount of smoke was encountered, making it difficult for officers to see and breathe in the rescue efforts.”

Marino continued to explain that the officers heard someone yelling in the basement, and they broke a small window and its frame — with the help of a large rock — before pulling two people out to safety.

Video of the rescue, caught on three of the officers’ body cameras, was initially circulated last month.

Curtis said they just did what any officers would do.

“When given the opportunity, you think most people are going to do the same thing, so we just happened to be asked that night,” Curtis shrugged.

Ricks said he was grateful to make a difference for the family.

“It meant a lot just knowing that we saved three people’s lives,” Ricks said. “Just working with these awesome people and their teamwork—it’s amazing.”
